Exterior stone and masonry cleaning in Cornwall
Respect the character of the material. Cleaning for suitable stonework, walls, steps and exterior details, considered around the stone, mortar and condition of the surface.
A cleaner surface should still look like itself
Cornwall's stone buildings and outdoor features are part of their setting. The aim is not to make every surface uniformly new-looking. Some discolouration is removable build-up; some is natural variation, patina or weathering. A close inspection of the material and mortar helps determine whether cleaning is appropriate and what a reasonable outcome looks like.
Walls and exterior masonry
Show the whole wall, the finish and the mortar joints. Loose pointing, soft or flaking material and previous coatings are important. Cleaning should not conceal the need for repair.
Steps and garden features
Include balustrades, edges and detailed surfaces in photographs. Ornamental features may have fragile sections, and steps can have existing wear or movement that cleaning will not rectify.
Mixed materials
A single area may combine stone, brick, concrete and different mortars. Tell us about nearby metalwork, planting or water features so the separate materials and surroundings can be considered.
Condition comes before intensity
Historic England's conservation research highlights that excessive or inappropriate cleaning can damage masonry. A lighter appearance is not automatically a better conservation result. Material identification, a conservative approach and an appropriate trial area can help set expectations. - Stone or masonry type if known, plus clear close-up photographs
- Approximate size and the features to be included
- Condition of joints, loose areas, coatings or previous repairs

Results and aftercare
Expect natural variation to remain. Cleaning is separate from repointing, sealing, restoration and structural repair unless specifically agreed. Keep an eye on continuing water run-off or localised damp rather than repeatedly treating a visible mark without understanding why it returns. A specialist opinion may be the best next step where the material is vulnerable.
Photographs help the initial assessment. They do not replace any necessary inspection or agreement of the method, scope and access before work.

Can you make old stone look new?
That is not an appropriate promise. The result depends on the stone and the build-up, and its natural colour and weathering should remain part of the material's character.
Do you clean listed or historic buildings?
Enquiries can be discussed, but no work is assumed suitable. Heritage status, condition and any specialist advice or approvals need to be considered first. Some work is better referred to a conservation specialist.
Are repairs and repointing included?
No—not automatically. A cleaning scope is separate from structural work or mortar repair. Existing defects should be identified before cleaning is booked.
Can you assess stone paving too?
Yes, include photographs and the surface details. Patio and path enquiries should also explain the jointing, drainage and approximate area so the whole setting can be considered.
